Driving down a 3 or 4 lane highway at 60 or 70 MPH some non thinking mentally challenged fools will drive one or two car lengths behind the car in front of them. WHY ? They will not reach their destination any sooner. If they are impatient why not pass the car in front of them. I prefer to drive 5 or 6 car lengths behind the car in front of me. If suddenly an animal would run out in front of one or two cars in front of you , they will slam on their brakes . Or if there is an accident 2 or 3 cars ahead of you , they will all slam on their brakes.
Now let’s do the math , when a driver first sees a problem his reaction time is about 1 1/2 seconds before applying the brakes and the distance you travel at 50 MPH is about 110 foot .before hitting the brakes. It would then take another 180 to 190 foot to come to a complete halt. 110 foot plus 190 foot equals 300 foot . At 60 MPH it would be about 132 foot before hitting the brakes and 260 to 270 foot before coming to a complete halt. ….total about 400 foot .
